Who's eligible
You must:
- be a domestic student
- be a female, a recent school leaver and have an unconditional offer of admission and enrolled full-time in a Science undergraduate degree within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney
- be enrolled in 12 credit points of mathematics/statistics/data units in your first year of study and 18 credit points of mathematics/statistics/data in your second year of study. Applicants are encouraged to enroll in advanced mathematics/statistics/data units.
Background
The scholarship was established in 2013, Peter Rae, son of Mrs Elva Mary Rae, founded the Mrs Elva Rae Talented Mathematics Students Initiative to encourage and support talented female mathematics and statistics students to reach their full potential in the mathematical sciences. This scholarship acknowledges top-ranked female Honours or Masters students based on their undergraduate studies.
Elva Mary Check graduated from The University of Sydney in 1949 and went on to a successful career as a biometrician.
1. Background
a. Established in 2013, Peter Rae, son of Mrs Elva Mary Rae, founded the Mrs Elva Rae Talented Mathematics Students Initiative to encourage and support talented female mathematics and statistics students to reach their full potential in the mathematical sciences. This scholarship acknowledges and supports undergraduate students studying mathematics/statistics at the University of Sydney.
b. Elva Mary Check graduated from The University of Sydney in 1949 and went on to a successful career as a biometrician.
2. Eligibility
a. The applicant must be a domestic student.
b. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the applicant being female, a recent school leaver and having an unconditional offer of admission full-time in a Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences in the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney. Degrees that are combined with other Faculties will not be considered.
c. Applicants must be enrolled in at least 12 credit points of mathematics/statistics/data units in their first year of study. It is a condition of award that recipients enrol in at least 18 credit points of mathematics/statistics/data in their second year of study. Applicants are encouraged to enrol in advanced mathematics/statistics/data units.
3. Selection Criteria
b. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:
I. academic merit and
II. response to relevant questions asked in the University of Sydney commencing domestic student scholarships application form.
c. Where there is a tie in academic merit, preference will be given to students who have demonstrated one or more forms of hardship via the UAC Educational Access Scheme.
d. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of the Head of School of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, or their nominated delegate(s).
4. Value
a. The Scholarship is valued at $2,500 per annum and is tenable for two years.
b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.
c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of Head of School of the School of Mathematics and Statistics or nominated delegate(s), and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university without prior approval.
d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.
e. No other amount is payable.
5. Ongoing Eligibility
a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must:
I. enrol in at least 12 credit points of mathematics/statistics/data units in their first year of study and in at least 18 credit points of mathematics/statistics/data in their second year of study (recipients are encouraged to enrol in advanced mathematics/statistics/data units) and
II. maintain a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 65 each semester.
b. If recipients enrol part-time in their degree, they must seek prior approval to hold the scholarship on a part-time basis. The payments may be paid on a pro-rata basis.
c. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.
6. Termination
a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:
I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,
II. commences part-time study without prior approval,
III. does not enrol in at least 12 credit points of Mathematics, Statistics, or Data Science units in the first year of study, and at least 18 credit points of Mathematics, Statistics, or Data Science units in the second year of study, commences part-time study without prior approval,
IV. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,
V. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,
VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or
VII. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.
b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.
c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
